Brouage, a former port
Located 35 km away from Royan and 6 km north of Marennes, Brouage was a prosperous port trading salt in the 17th century. It was one of the most important ports in Europe.
However, over time, the channel silted up, the ocean withdrew and the mooring place for up to 200 boats disappeared… Brouage fell dormant.
Today the fortress of Brouage stands in the midst of vast marshland. Visitors can walk for 2 kilometres along its walls, which form the shape of a star.
